Heroic last moments of September 11 terror flight Hijackers on United Flight 93 shouted "they're coming" moments before the plane crashed on September 11, transcripts of the cockpit voice recorder has revealed. Breaking glass and crashing dishes are also heard on the tape, indicating a desperate struggle for control of the jet after passengers stormed the cockpit. A woman pleading for her life and groans and shouts in English and Arabic are caught on the tape of the last 30 minutes of the flight, which crashed in Pennsylvania, killing all 44 passengers and crew. An accented voice is heard saying "no, no" at one point, giving rise to speculation the hijackers may have been arguing over the controls, the New York Times reported. But officials say the tape does not make clear whether passengers did try to regain control of the plane or whether the hijackers crashed the Boeing 757 deliberately. It also does not reveal how the hijackers took over the plane and whether they killed the pilot and co-pilot. "We don't have all the answers, but there is no question in my mind that the passengers were heroes," said Wells Morrison, from the FBI. The tape reveals an alarm sounded in the cockpit because the plane was flying up to 150mph faster than the instructed limit of 425mph for its low altitude. Hank Krakowski from United Airlines said the jet may even have broken the sound barrier. Investigators believe the hijackers intended to use the plane to launch an attack on Washington DC on either the White House or the Capitol. Cockpit voice recorders are normally kept secret, but families of the victims will be allowed to hear the tape next month after appealing to the FBI. One of the passengers, Todd Beamer, spoke to his wife Deena while on the flight, then said: "You guys ready? Let's roll." The phrase has become a slogan in the US, where the 45 passengers and crew of Flight 93 have been hailed as heroes, and rock star Neil Young has written a song around it. |
