Attorney general admits use of Patriot Act in Mayfield case

Since last May, when the FBI admitted it had wrongly arrested Portland lawyer Brandon Mayfield following the Madrid train bombings, the Muslim convert has contended that the Patriot Act was used to gain secret entry into his home and gather personal material which was used to portray him as a Muslim militant.

Afghanistan likely to have permanent US military

Afghanistan's defence minister on Tuesday gave one of the clearest signs yet that Kabul is open to permanent basing of US forces in the country, saying his government was in discussions with the US that could include air bases in Afghanistan after the current nation-building process ends.

Beslan parents fear troops killed hostages
