Well the board at Prison Planet ( and this is my opinion / best guess ) has simply grown to big, and to complex. I don't think it has really sunk home that there are limits to the size and complexity plausible.
The good news is that the other reason they are having problems is more and more people are visiting the forum, either as guests or registering.
They need to do a very radical re-think followed by a New Design. They have big problems.
Still there Admin is about, and once enough people have lost connection the site will come back up, until the next time it gets overloaded.

PPF very sluggish with connection this afternoon. Difficult to get pages to load due to repeated connection loss.

To avoid the sort of problems they are having over at Prison Planet I've been doing a little organising like splitting this thread. Hope its not confused anyone.

You know what, I really have my doubts that large threads are the culprit there. I've been going to that site for over 2 years now, and it has been that way from day one. It's never been fast like any other site. It's always had this issue, and the whole time there were long threads. If any thread at all is affecting the site, I would put my money on the "funny pictures" thread. Anybody who messes with images online in sites knows full well preventing images from bogging down a site is an ongoing primary problem in web design. Think of all those images are having to link back to wherever they are hosted. Text takes up the absolute least amount of disc space, and those long threads are just text. Consider a 1000 word Word doc, and then compare it to a doc with an image in it. BIG difference in size.
That said, my gut feeling is that it's not the images, but the server the site is on and how the site is managing bandwidth. And yes, I do believe they are managing bandwidth use for the site. I mean it's a free site with a good amount of traffic that is bringing in no income to speak of. Keep costs to a minimum is reasonable.

Well, I never claimed to be an IT expert, but I really had my doubts that long threads would have that much effect to a board, then there's this... (from the ways to make SMF go faster) 9: Do you really need that many boards? I tend to see this rather often and the answer is almost always no. Too many boards actually reduces your forum's activity, for one, but in the case of optimization here, each and every board takes up resources on the relatively common index load, as well as space for the log_boards and log_mark_read tables, with an amount that grows for each new member you gain.
Addition #3: Cap the length of your threads This is one of those things that ought to be a setting - even vBulletin is known for choking on large threads, look up rpg.net's motivational poster history. Large threads mean there is a large result set for further instructions in the query to prune from, and if a thread is too disproportionally large, even browsing the thread will result in using table scans instead of the index - a very bad situation indeed.
30k is what I use for Elliquiy, and Ben uses 25k for Red and White Kop. Keep in mind, though, that we are both running finely tuned dedicated servers with two hard disks, two cores, and 4gb of RAM. You may want to cap thread length closer to 1k posts.
This also has the effect of making individual threads less overwhelming.
If that's the case, it's a wonder PPF is up and running at all. Max 1k posts? Really? Seems pretty conservative.

Now multiple forums are down.... around the web. I have to assume the worst and that this is an all out attack.
