Chip firm urges governments to push RFID use

Philips Semiconductors has called on European governments to promote RFID technology in security and retail applications.

The firm said governments should collaborate with industry to take full advantage of what it believes could be “the most pervasive technology ever seen”.

... with over 100 billion tags in healthcare, supply chain, retail and banking environments. This could dwarf mobile phone penetration,” said Christophe Duverne, v-p for identification strategy at Philips Semiconductors.

As well as the commercial and technical implications of electronic tagging systems, the industry must not ignore privacy and security concerns, said Duverne.

At a conference in Paris this week, the chip maker will say that governments must establish the necessary regulatory frameworks for RFID use, allowing for industry self-regulatory approach and to address data privacy issues.

“The key players – technology firms, national and international governments and research and academic institutions – must work together if the full benefits of RFID technology are to be realised,” said Duverne.
