Toronto Police are stepping up their search for missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili by visiting 6,000 Forest Hill homes and asking for permission to have a look around inside.

The move, which comes nearly two months after the now 18-year-old girl vanished without a trace on her way to school, is rare but it has been successful in several investigations in the past.

"(It will be) an intensive investigative canvass of the area where Mariam lived and went to school," lead investigator Det.-Sgt. Dan Nealon, of 53 Division, said today.

In what he called "an unprecedented move," police have assigned 60 officers to conduct the intense door-to-door search of the 6,000 residences - houses and apartments - in the densely populated area surrounding Mariam's family home on Shallmar Blvd., northeast of Bathurst St. and Eglinton Ave. W.
