Opposition to hostilities gains momentum around world

Lebanon Daily Star | July 28 2006

BEIRUT: Public opinion surveys conducted in major countries this week revealed that most people believe that Israel's reaction to the capture of two of its soldiers by the Hizbullah resistance group in Lebanon has been disproportionate.

Most Britons believe Israel's response to the abduction of its soldiers in Lebanon and Gaza has been "inappropriate and disproportionate," a YouGov poll in the Daily Telegraph suggested Thursday.

Sixty-three percent hold the view that the Jewish state has the right to defend itself against Hizbullah rocket attacks and those by Hamas in the Palestinian territories.

A total of 49 percent agreed that it was "fair" to say that in Lebanon, Israel was "targeting the whole Lebanese nation and not just Hizbullah" against 23 percent who thought the assessment "unfair."

A separate survey revealed that Americans are pessimistic about the Lebanon conflict, saying they believe Washington should not help resolve the war and that the US presence in Iraq will not stabilize the Middle East, a poll showed Thursday.

President George W. Bush's handling of the war between Israel and Hizbullah received 47 percent support and 26 percent disapproval in a survey of 1,127 adults from July 21 through July 25 by The New York Times and CBS News, published Thursday.

But only 33 percent said the United States should take on the responsibility of trying to resolve the conflict, against 58 percent who said it should not.

As far as who is to blame for the violence in the Middle East, 5 percent pointed at Israel, 38 percent to Hizbullah and 46 percent to both.

Twenty-six percent felt Israel's response to Hizbullah's attacks had gone too far, nine percent felt it had not gone not far enough, and 48 percent said the response was "about right."

Americans were split with regards to US relations with Israel in the conflict: 39 percent said it should support Israel, while 40 percent said Washington should say or do nothing.

Support in Israel for the war against Hizbullah remains overwhelmingly high, but there has been an increase in the tiny minority that wants to stop fighting in Lebanon, an opinion poll published on Thursday showed.

The poll in Maariv said support dropped over the week from 90 percent to 82 percent.

There was no change in the 95 percent of Israelis who said Israel's offensive was justified and the correct in response to the capture of the two soldiers and killing of eight others by Hizbullah on July 12, according to the poll. - Agencies
