Gonzales defends NSA warrant-less taps

UPI | January 18 2006

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is dismissing calls for a special prosecutor to probe National Security Agency surveillance without warrants.

Former Vice President Al Gore made the call for an investigation on Monday, but in the evening, Gonzales told CNN that President George Bush has the authority to order the electronic surveillance without obtaining warrants.

"We believe the president does have the legal authorities to authorize this program," he said. "We need to know who the enemy is. We need to know what the enemy is thinking. We need to know where the enemy is thinking about striking us again."

Soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Bush authorized the NSA to intercept communications between people inside the United States, including U.S. citizens, and terror suspects overseas.
