ID cards have already cost taxpayers £32m

Toby Helm / London Telegraph | February 23 2006

Ministers have admitted spending £32 million on preparing for the introduction of ID cards before Parliament has even been approved.

The figures issued by Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, in a Commons written answer, also show that spending soared in the second half of last year from £25,000 a day to £63,000 a day.

The Bill, currently passing through Parliament, is opposed by Labour rebels, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats and many peers in the House of Lords.

Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrats home affairs spokesman, said the Government was shelling out money that it had "no right to spend." He predicted they would fuel opposition to the project.

"It is completely unacceptable to forge ahead on a scheme which will radically alter British society without the approval of MPs," he said.
