Russia May Establish Unmanned Base on Moon by 2011

Mos News | October 5 2006

Russia may set up an unmanned base on the Moon by 2011, a scientist has said.

There is an official Russian project to launch a Moon satellite, to be called Luna-Glob, Vladimir Shevchenko, a professor at the State Astronomy Institute of Moscow State University, was quoted by Interfax as saying at a scientific conference in Moscow.

“This may be followed by projects for new landing modules and Moon research vehicles. And if such a program materializes, a Russian base may be set up on the Moon by 2011,” he said.

He mentioned a hypothesis that the Moon’s numerous craters are the effect of a “space shower.”
