Prozac? Depression theory in fatal stabbing of children
A mother being held on suspicion of murdering two of her children and leaving a third fighting for her life has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
Sasikala Navaneethan, 35, who may have been suffering from depression, was detained after her five-year-old son and four-year-old daughter were stabbed to death at the family home in Carshalton, south London.
Her third child, a six-month-old daughter, remains in a critical state in hospital after surgery to treat stab wounds following the incident.
Mrs Navaneethan's husband, Navarajah, 39 – known as Noah to friends – was working at the family shop, Best Save Food and Wine, in Coulsdon, about five miles away, until shortly after 10pm on Friday.
He returned to the family home, a detached house into which they moved six months ago, shortly after the arrival of police some time after 10.30pm.
Neighbours said he looked shocked and was ushered inside. Witnesses saw the limp figures of the children being carried out to ambulances.
The five-year-old boy was named locally as Shanjayan and his four-year-old sister as Sharani. The baby's name has not been disclosed.
