Computers brainer than humans in 20 years

Nick Farrell / The Inquirer | August 22 2006

COMPUTERS will be brainier than humans in 20 years and will transcend biology according to a new book hitting the stands.

In his book The Singularity is Near, synthesiser inventor Ray Kurzweil says that computer power is growing exponentially. If it keeps growing at this rate then computer will get pretty smart pretty quick.

He said that the fifth human epoch will see humanity transcend its biology and eventually the two will merge. He predicts that the universe will be saturated with superintelligent processes as a result.

Kurzweil said that there will be no distinction, post-singularity, between human and machine or between physical and virtual reality.

On the upside there are several huge advantages in the Singularity. Nanobots can repair you when you are sick and the universe will be full of virtual shagging. The downside is that there will always be hackers and viruses.
