Russia Will Gun Down Passenger Jets Hijacked by Terrorists — Air Force Commander

Mos News | August 11 2006

Passenger planes hijacked by terrorists may be brought down only as long as there is a tangible threat to important installations on the Russian territory, Russia’s chief air force commander told the media.

“But if a passenger flight arriving from some other state fails to follow our orders, its crew having been replaced with terrorists, then of course we will take measures to bring it down,” Mikhailov said. “The decision must be made proceeding from the specific situation,” he added.

Russia’s top military officials first came up with an idea of allowing them to gun down planes seized by terrorists in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on Washington and New York.
