CCTV helps spot illegal parking

BBC | August 7 2006

Motorists parking illegally in central London could now be caught using hi-tech CCTV cameras.

Drivers contravening parking laws, in areas like the West End, will be pictured and then sent a fine through the post.

Westminster City Council said it is rolling out the scheme across the borough following a successful trial earlier this year.

It added the role of parking attendants will remain unchanged.

Westminster councillor Danny Chalkley said: "Our pilot scheme proved that CCTV is a reliable and cost-effective. CCTV cameras mean more tickets will be right first time.

"Westminster remains the leading authority in parking enforcement that continues to improve and be firm, fair and excellent."
